The Department of Chemistry Presents: Jedd Hillegass, PhD, DABT, Occupational Toxicologist at Bristol-Myers Squibb
BIO
Dr. Jedd Hillegass is a distinguished toxicologist with extensive expertise in occupational toxicology, product quality, and nonclinical drug safety. Since 2014, Dr. Hillegass has been contributing to Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) in various capacities, playing a pivotal role in advancing the company's occupational toxicology and nonclinical safety initiatives.
Currently serving as a Senior Principal Scientist leading the Occupational Toxicology group within Nonclinical Safety at BMS, Dr. Hillegass serves as a subject matter expert and leads efforts related to occupational toxicology across BMS globally, including identifying occupational health hazards via in silico, in vitro and in vivo testing to support worker safety and hazard communication, evaluating pharmacological and toxicological data to aid in establishing applicable exposure limits, and performing toxicology risk assessments for impurities, quality events, and extractables and leachables. He also serves as the project toxicologist for an immunology asset being explored for the treatment of lupus, developing nonclinical toxicology strategy, authoring nonclinical sections of regulatory summary documents, and addressing health authority queries.
Prior to joining Bristol Myers Squibb in 2014, Dr. Hillegass was Senior Toxicologist at Lampire Biological Laboratories (from 2010-2014), where he directed a laboratory focused on conducting teratogenicity and embryotoxicity assessments using alternative in vitro models of development. He received his MS in Environmental Science from Rutgers University in 2003, and his PhD from the Joint Graduate Program in Toxicology between Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 2008. Following graduation, Dr. Hillegass served as both a Postdoctoral Fellow and Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Pathology at the University of Vermont from 2008-2010.
Dr. Hillegass is deeply involved in industry consortia such as the Occupational Toxicology Roundtable (OTR), Extractables and Leachables Safety Information Exchange (ELSIE), and IQ DruSafe, reflecting his commitment to advancing toxicology science. In addition to being a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, Dr. Hillegass is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Rutgers University Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. He has authored or co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications during his academic and professional career and is currently an active member of both the Society of Toxicology and the American College of Toxicology.
