Beyond the Bench: Driving Innovation and Operational Excellence in the Life Sciences Industry
The Department of Chemistry is pleased to present our 2026 Caress Alumni Speaker: Dr. Kaveh Kahen, President, Phenomenex
The transition from academic research to industrial R&D represents a fundamental transformation in both scope and mindset. While a solid scientific background provides the essential intellectual engine, industrial R&D operates within a complex ecosystem where technical mastery is only the starting point. To move from discovery to a commercialized reality with global impact, a specialized research background must be integrated into a broader framework of operational excellence and strategic execution.
This presentation explores the multifaceted nature of R&D within the life sciences and analytical tools sector, examining how scientific discovery is scaled into viable technology. Drawing on a career journey that spans from the laboratories of George Washington University to executive leadership roles at global organizations such as Danaher and PerkinElmer, the discussion will highlight the "silent drivers" of professional impact; elements that are sometimes overlooked but play a decisive role in long-term success:
The Business of Science: Bridging the gap between the bench and the boardroom by integrating finance, marketing, and strategic management into scientific decision-making.
The Power of Soft Skills: Examining why discipline, conflict management, coaching, and presentation skills are as critical as technical expertise in high-stakes, collaborative environments.
The Strategic Pivot: Navigating career choices and remaining adaptable in an era of rapid technological transformation and global volatility.
While academia remains a vital pillar of discovery, the global life sciences industry offers a unique and expansive platform for growth. Ultimately, a Ph.D. should be viewed not merely as a specialized credential, but as a versatile toolkit for leadership, encouraging current students to approach the evolving professional landscape with an open and strategic mind.
